Rule 5: Key pages

A face-to-face meeting in Birmingham was an opportunity to exchange our completed individual sections, enabling the next layer of imagery to be completed before a planned making day in February. Using our time together enabled productive discussions around the use of the key which will be necessary to communicate the 6 ‘words in common’ – drink, sit, relax, pick, play, prune; decisions regarding placement had already been finalised with the six words divided between two pages; using the mock-up and sketchbooks we were able to confirm layout, sizing and method – which will consist of us each adding individual elements to the allocated pages within a grid structure.

Rule 4: Individual Objects

In continuing to code each section of our individual gardens making use of the flat plans produced by P, one page in each garden began to emerge as an anomaly. With no clear alignment to any of the three previously identified themes, we made use of our weekly FaceTime conversations to talk through alternative visual approaches for these pages. Returning to the grid reference and our original garden drawings, we exchanged ideas noting thoughts around objects, surface and colour. The use of an object of significance from the specific location resonated with both of us and we explored ideas around how best to represent these. Returning to a method previously used by P, we determined to transfer a black and white section of the object to the page. Further details around significance of scales of working and techniques employed were shared as final images were developed.
