Knitted Garments, Beverages and Conversation

Personal data gathered over a 12 month period of online meetings was categorised within a spreadsheet; the discovery by T of a knitting book from the 1940s became the catalyst, and a decision was made to focus one edition solely on clothing data relating to knitted garments. The found book was taken apart and relevant sections trimmed to form new pages that reflected the size of the original Muji notebooks used to contain data. We identified 10 days when knitwear was worn either collectively or individually – this offered the book structure. The visual language of the book took inspiration from T’s knit monoprint within Recollections; tests were carried out with other knitwear but unfortunately the nature of the machine-made knit was not particularly successful. The decision was made to use hand-knit and print onto one of three different sized stickers defined by the quantity and range of knitwear. The colour would relate to each specific garment.

Book 2. Dismissing food data, we focussed on drinks and through T’s note-keeping were able to establish conversation topics relating to the relevant 10 days. The pages would be produced individually using recognised processes (mono-printing from shapes and tracing). To connect the books visually – as well as through format, drinks advertisements from the 1950s and 60s were considered as front covers.
